British combat association residential course Nov 2008
The BCA last weekend celebrated their 15 years at the very top of the UK martial arts scene, by holding their first residential weekend course at the prestigious venue of Lilleshill national sports centre of excellence near Telford.
Kevin was one of the invited guest instructors for the weekend. Kevin has been a senior instructor with the BCA from the early days and taught on one of their famed instructor courses back in 1996. It was long overdue for him to come back again and to meet up with the founders, Peter Consterdine and Geoff Thompson. Also to meet up with other old friends such as Rick Young, Mo Teague, Alan Peasdale and many more.
Kevin taught the final session of the 4-day course on Sunday morning.
Kevin put the 50 strong group through a shortened version of his Gladiator total body workout. There were a few pale faces after this.
He then moved on to focus pad workout, combining this with takedowns. The double leg takedown was covered in-depth.
Next were takedown defences and then standing and floor chokes and strangles.
Kevin references this to his MMA experiences and how to adapt these lessons to the street. He emphasized that strangles and chokes were the fastest grappling finishers in any arena.
The assembled group took to the training with 100% and the mat was buzzing.
Soeli one of the few of Kevin's female pupils then demonstrated how to punch the pads with a blistering display of power punching. As they say don't judge a book by its cover. Peter C was the first to start off a rousing round of applauses from all present.
The 21/2 hours flew by, not only did the techniques go well but also the banter between father and son. Jake worked extremely well with Kevin. A Q&A session ended the morning with photos and signings after.
Peter and Geoff where highly complementary of Kevin's teaching abilities and also his high level of fitness. It was a great weekend and hopefully there will be more in the near future...
Kevin O'Hagan was invited to teach at Master Al Wharton annual open invitational martial arts tournament in Bermuda on the 17th, 18th and 19th of October 2008.
Kevin and his eldest son Tom flew out to be guest instructors on this very prestigious event. (Kevin is the first UK instructor to teach at this tournament.)
Master Wharton is an 8th Dan in Issin Ryu Karate and wanted Kevin out there to teach his Combat jujutsu and street self defence methods.
Kevin taught 3 seminars ably assisted by Tom and they all went down extremely well with the cross section of Martial artists present.
They also closed the final day of the tournament with a Mixed Martial Arts demo fight, which received standing applause.
It was a highly successful first time visit to the beautiful island paradise of Bermuda and Kevin has provisionally been asked to visit again to establish his self protection syllabus there.
