Review of 'surviving edged weapons attacks' training and research, as well as his own experience in the security industry. "Edged Weapons Attacks" is no exception. I had the opportunity to train in a variety of styles in 4 countries over the last thirty years, and while this does not make me an expert, it does provide me with a few references to compare with, whenever I come across new material. On that basis, I found Kevin's book very useful; it focuses on the essential aspects of awareness, avoidance as the best defence. There are no fancy defensive moves in this book; they can be found in countless of existing texts - and most don't work - not under pressure in a real life encounter anyway. In contrast, Kevin covers some rarely explored, but essential aspects; as always, he emphasizes the need to fight back aggressively and decisively if no other options are available, with any improvised means possible - while expecting to get cut anyway. This is not a reading for the faint hearted - because it addresses the real issues, such as the type of wounds to expect, and what to do to increase the odds to survive them - no matter how horrific and frightening they may be. Kevin also reminds readers throughout that only specialized training, combined with regular pressure testing, can realistically increase the odds of survival through a skilled response. I would recommend this approachable little manual for those who want to seek reliable, no-nonsense information on the most likely weapon scenario in case of street violence, and how to increase the odds of coming out alive. For the asking price of £10.00p it is an absolute bargain.
